One of the reasons it took so long for a Terminator 3 to happen is because James Cameron, like him or not, is actually one of those Hollywood guys with a modicum of respect for the material. He felt there was nowhere to go from Terminator 2... so the studio found a couple guys who did and had THEM crank out the sequel! horror movie Still starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, of course.. otherwise nobody would have ever (blog post) bothered to watch this.
